Our Artistic Directors
Partners on and off the stage, violinist Jaime Laredo and cellist Sharon Robinson are “the foremost husband-wife team in concert music” (Minneapolis Tribune)..
The storybook romance of the Bolivian-born violinist Jaime Laredo and American cellist Sharon Robinson has, for over 40 years, been expressed in every facet of their lives. Joyous and sophisticated music making, both separately and together, has earned them many devoted fans the world over. Combining international careers and a multifaceted home life both in Vermont and Ohio, theirs is a bond of both close personal affection and strong dedication to music. As much-in- demand solo artists, as the Laredo-Robinson Duo, and as founding members of the award-winning Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio with pianist Joseph Kalichstein for 45 years, Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson are among the busiest and most respected musicians in the world.
Whether streaming or before a live audience, Mr. Laredo and Ms. Robinson have performed in recital for audiences stretching across the US from Northern Vermont to Miami and Seattle to San Diego, including appearances at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. They have appeared in the major concert halls in Europe such as Wigmore Hall and the Concertgebouw and on tour in Laredo’s native Bolivia.
The Laredo-Robinson Duo has long been a champion of new works and has greatly added to the double concerto canon. They continue to share performances of Chris Brubeck’s Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, Pas de Deux. Written specifically for them, this work has been a highlight since
its 2019 premiere at the Classical Tahoe Festival in Nevada. Andre Previn wrote his 2014 Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Orchestra for the duo, which has delighted audiences on both
sides of the Atlantic. They have premiered and recorded double concertos by Richard Danielpour, Daron Hagen, David Ludwig, Ned Rorem, and Ellen Zwilich. Adding to the rich duo repertoire are Richard Danielpour’s 2011 Inventions on a Marriage (written especially for them, this 20-minute piece of contrasting movements explores in “musical snapshots” the bond of marriage and long- term relationships) and Andy Stein’s Suite for Two, which commemorated their 30th wedding anniversary. Laredo and Robinson continually bring a fresh approach to double concertos by Brahms, Vivaldi and Rosza as well as duos by Ravel, Handel-Halvorsen, Schulhoff, Mozart, and Kodály.
Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson received a Grammy nomination for the Two Brahms Sextets CD on SONY with their renowned colleagues Isaac Stern, Cho-Liang Lin, Michael Tree and Yo-Yo Ma. To celebrate Schubert’s anniversary, that same ensemble (sans Michael Tree) also recorded Schubert’s great Cello Quintet for SONY. Among the Duo’s recordings on KOCH are Conversations, works by David Ott, Handel, Glière and Kodály and an all-Zwilich Concerto CD with Jaime Laredo, Sharon Robinson and Joseph Kalichstein as the soloists, including the double concerto written for Laredo and Robinson, and a triple concerto written for the Trio. Triple Doubles (BRIDGE) features three new double concertos performed with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, with Troy Peters and Sarah Hicks conducting.
In 2025 the husband-and-wife team were named distinguished artists in residence at Oberlin College and Conservatory. From 2012 to 2024 they were members of the esteemed instrumental and chamber music faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music, and previously taught at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. In 2009, Laredo and Robinson became the co-artistic directors of Linton Music in Cincinnati. They have held similar posts with the Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle, the annual summer chamber music series at Bard College in Annandale- on-Hudson, New York, since 2000. They also serve as Artistic Advisers to the Brattleboro Music Center in Vermont.
Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson reside in Guilford, VT and Cleveland, OH.
